A programme on Radio 4 yesterday, Monday 21 May (still available on i-player), took a look at modern incarnations of the genre, interviewing writers like Jasper Fforde, Christopher Fowler, Denise Mina, and French author, Paul Halter, who specialises almost exclusively in locked-room mysteries, inspired by John Dickson Carr, the acknowledged master. One or two of Halter’s books are available in the UK, translated by John Pugmire (try the Book Depository).


I’ve just read Gaston Leroux’s ‘Le Mystere de la Chambre Jaune’ (yes, I read it in French – it took me ages and much concentration was required), a complicated, clever locked room story which has been voted one of the best of the genre. and is well worth looking out for.
